It's early in the morning and you're heading up to your office, feeling cranky that you're not still dreaming in bed, or you're on your way home and can't wait to get some much needed fresh air. You enter the elevator, and then you hear close-by footsteps belonging to someone from your office who's likely sharing the same sentiments. In no mood to share small talk, you have a choice to make — hold the elevator door or pretend that you're clueless. What's your usual go-to reaction?

I'm guilty of this. If I'm in a mood and it was a co worker I didn't really care for I wouldn't bother to hold the door.
Oops.
1These days I usually take the stairs. But I'll try and hold the elevator if I take that instead.
2I do. I would hate for someone to let the doors close right in front of my face, unless the elevator was crowded.
3I usually will...I am not in a office anymore with an elevator though, so it's just the door now.
4I usually hold the elevator, even with people I don't particularly like.
5Of course I do! What is the world coming to when it's not proper manners to hold the elevator for someone?!?!
6I work on the ground floor, but if I did have to use an elevator I do hold it open for people.
7i have a coworker I can't stand to be in any enclosed space with, so when I hear her door shut at the end of the day i give her time to get down the elevator without me. I'm horrible, I know...but I never hold the elevator for her. She's such a witch anyway, she'll come running and throw herself at it and get in even when it's almost shut.
8I hold the elevator for everyobody, no matter where I am. why not??
9I hold the door (it's policy here), but sometimes when I try to scramble for the "door open" button, I end up punching "door close"...sue me.
10i hate holding the door...i work in a busy building and i'm on the very top floor...when you hold it for one person, you inevitably get 10 people coming in, punching every floor, and it takes forever to make it up
11i don't feel too badly because there are 8 elevators, so it's not like they can't get another one!
First off, I work in a building with a bunch of other offices, so it isn't like I know any of these people. Plus, even though there are express elevators, We have 35+ floors. If I am in a hurry, I head to the back of the elevator, so there is no obligation to hold the door, if you make it before it closes, great, if not...check ya later.
12love ALSW's response. way to go! I need to pick up a habit like that too!
13i always try to ... even if everyone else in the car is being an ass. [there are two door open buttons, so if i can't get to it in time, someone else should be able to.]
14lizs, it's POLICY where you work?
15how weird that they can make a policy about holding the elevator! even when i try, i always accidentally hit the close door button!
I almost always hit the close door button but it is a accident because our elevator takes days to go up and down FOUR FREAKIN FLOORS(FYI we cant take the stairs to the other floors either yeah sucks big time)!! So we always try to hold it so now i just use my hand to hold it.
16I try to take the stairs when I'm going home, but I usually hold the elevator for people. However, like some other people, I am discriminate about who I'll keep it open for (e.g. if there is someone who isn't nice and I don't want to talk to or someone who doesn't keep the elevator open for others, then I won't wait for them).
17i do actually try to hold the door, but sometimes it's too much. there are a LOT of floors in my building so if i held the door EVERY time it started to close, i would NVER get to my desk. there are so many people in this building that NEVER hold the door, that i can't feel bad about leaving a person or 2 behind. i'm usually really nice about it though.
18Definitely depends on my mood. I have been known to play the clueless card.
19I don't work in a building with an elevator, but I live toward the top of a 10-story apartment building.
If I can SEE the person near me or hear them scurrying for the elevator, I hold the door. If they are at the far end of the hall where I can't see them and are making no attempt to call to me to hold it or quicken their pace to make it, I don't. There are 3 elevators - my neighbors can grab another one.
On the other hand, I've had some of the Senior Citizens here in the building furiously bang the "close door" button while I'm walking into the elevator. That's always a treat.
20I think that what is worse is the people who are so anxious to get on the elevator, that they don't let the people on it off. I would take elevator doors closing in my face all day, if the people in my building would learn the social rules for using the elevator
21We don't have an elevator at my work (OK, we do, but we are only a two-story building with almost everyone on the main floor, so employees do not use it). I would like to think I would hold the door, but I am not sure.
22I'm pretty mean about this...As long as they don't see me, I won't hold the elevator for them (and furiously press Close Door). If they catch me going in the elevator, I'll hold the elevator out of guilt and because I don't want them to think I'm a horrible person.
