According to Newsday, some economic stimulus rebate checks are appearing in the wrong bank accounts. Americans receiving their checks through direct deposit are getting them before those who will be receiving paper checks. And while paper checks run the risk of ending up in your neighbor's mailbox, it seems that some direct deposit payments have landed in the bank accounts of strangers.
Kevin McKeon, a spokesman for the IRS said, "We do know of instances of problems; we've heard of situations where stimulus checks have gone to the wrong people's bank accounts. We're getting a lot of calls to the toll-free number." If you've already used the Where's My Stimulus Payment tool on the IRS website and are searching for your rebate, or if you're looking for your tax refund for that matter, McKeon recommends calling the toll-free service Refund Hotline at 800-829-1954.

1LOL. This is crazy.
2Oh great!!! I still haven't received mine and I bet you this is what happened. Just my luck!!!
3Wow, I'm sure there will be some people who get the extra cash by mistake and not say a thing.
That's scary.
4I finally got mine today! Yeah! Since we are moving this weekend it really comes in handy!
5This is a little spooky. I wonder the people who got their (out of error) spend it or were they too scared when it ended up in their bank account. I wonder did the gov just resnatch the money or did they actually contact the individuals to alert them to the errors.
6Still waiting on mine and no info available on the IRS site...sigh.
7a few years ago, someone stole my refund check from my mailbox and cashed it, so that was a whole process to go through that now i ONLY use direct deposit. thankfully my check this year came to me, so i'm not overly concerned...i could imagine that people would get frustrated if their check went to someone else. imagine the issue that will arise if a check goes to you accidentally and you use that money before the IRS realizes it.
8Wow, this is awful. ilanac13, I'm so sorry something like this happened to you before too!
