We already heard about gas prices affecting the quality of schools and it was only a matter of time before the other bane of our existence, sky-rocketing food prices, started to affect schools as well. The cost of staples like milk, eggs, and flour has risen so much that school cafeterias are struggling to maintain both nutritious meals and full staffs. Because schools have to meet weekly requirements for protein, starch, calories and specific food groups in order to qualify for federal reimbursement, more likely than not personnel will be scaled back to accommodate rising prices.

I guess the recession is hitting all of the United States, I guess it will leave every rock overturned.
My son's school provides free breakfast but no lunch. I guess it's cheaper for the school. Besides, I like to prepare his lunch, at least I know he is eating his fruits and veggies that I place in his lunchbox.
My aunt works in the staff of one of the local high school's kitchens. Makes me nervous for her!
I loved the cafeteria food at my high school, it kept me healthy for four years! Majority of the students near me get free lunch depending on how much your family makes, or a reduced lunch. Hopefully this recession will fade out when I have kids. If not, PB & J for all
Oh that's so sad!!! I loved school food, from elementary to high school!!! And I always had my favorite lunch ladies!!!
This is awful because getting a good meal is so key for children's ability to stay awake and focused for learning.
This is definitely sad to hear. Hopefully if it gets to the point where the kids are noticing differences in the food, they are being educated on why changes have been made and how to make the right economic and healthy choices for the future.
Where I grew up, the schools do not provide food for free ever. We had no cafeteria in grade school, and in high school we had one but they tended to have super unhealthy food at rather expensive prices. Most of us just brought our lunches to school.
The school I work at serves fairly healthy meals. They always have at least a couple of healthy options anyway. I haven't noticed any change in this yet and I hope it doesn't happen!
I remember always having to pay for lunch...no free food for me!
I read an article that said a school's meal budget was about 80 cents per student. It makes me wonder what the budget for prison meals are and if the funds couldn't be better used elsewhere.
