More Rebate Check Details

TeamSugar member frevirg pointed out one aspect of the rebate check schedule that I hadn't yet highlighted. While I paid for my tax service as soon as my tax return was filed and used my bank account, some tax services allow filers the option of having those fees taken directly from their tax refund. Frevirg was proactive and navigated around the TurboTax website, and found the following information that may be useful to some of you.

Under certain circumstances, however, the IRS has decided that taxpayers can only get their rebates by mail, even if they get their refunds by direct deposit. At TurboTax, this will happen if you use a "refund transfer" when filing your 2007 return. This service lets you pay for your tax preparation and/or e-filing from your refund proceeds, for an additional fee...

It really took some digging around on the site to find this information and not because it's unorganized. There are a lot of questions and answers surrounding the rebate check, so when you're poking around for answers be sure to take your time and read carefully. The IRS website has a wealth of information regarding the checks, which makes it a good place to check-in, so to speak.

I was going to let them take the fee out of my refund, but I didn't. I forget why. I think it may have been cheaper if I paid by credit card... either way, glad I didn't now cause I already gots my monies! Laughing out loud

That freaking sucks! Angry Mob The whole reason I even did direct deposit was so I could get my rebate May 9th instead of the end of June. Had I known, I would have used a debit or credit card. Oh well...thanks for the info.

ImLissy...it was extra for them to just take it out of your refund (like maybe even $20) so that was probably the reason why you didn't do it. GRRR!!! I am kicking myself now....what a dumb move.

Recieved my rebate today. And even those with over 3,000 dollars of taxable income will not always get 600$. I discovered you get the amount of your net federal income tax liability, with a MAXIMUM of $600 and a minimum of $300.

This happened to my cousin. She had her taxes done and did the fast refund at an extra cost and now will not receive her stimulus payment via direct deposit. They are mailing her a paper check on May 16. This is exactly why I do my own taxes and mail them into the IRS with all my documents and just wait patiently for my refund to be direct deposited. It took me 3 weeks from the time they received my tax return to get my refund direct deposited, but now I am supposed to get my stimulus direct deposited on May 9th.

duckduckgoose and lady angel....if you don't mind sharing the last digits of your social? Ours is 48 and IRS website says May 9th. Just curious how they are actually doing this. I know its by social, but what else do they do to determine when to deposit someones rebate? Alphabetical? When they received your return?

Uh, I filed my federal taxes with Turbo for free. Is the said cost for STATE tax filing?

I filed my state taxes directly through my state's website. That was for free, too.

Since many of the details covering the tax rebate checks were not communicated by the IRS until tax season was almost over, there have been many surprises for taxpayers (and the tax software vendors). For example, earlier posts have already talked about the fact that those taxpayers who used a third party bank to process their tax service fees and refund will receive their REBATE by check. Bummer yes!

But this also applies to anyone who elected to have their tax refund split between more than one account. For example, perhaps you wanted to split your refund between your savings and checking accounts. As a result, the IRS will be mailing you a REBATE check instead of direct deposit. Just another case of unintented consequence.

On the positive side, at least the IRS is about a week ahead of schedule in processing the REBATE checks.
