It seems like gasoline sets a new price per gallon record each week — while the cost steadily creeps upward, it also kills a lot of our weekend trips and vacation plans. Those who enjoy torturing themselves over the price of gas have been speculating that gas could reach the $5 per gallon mark this Summer. We worry about gas on the rise because it affects what we can spend on other necessities, but there's nothing we can do to make those numbers drop. We can, however, take a few simple steps to extend time between trips to the gas station. ABC News rounded up these tips for making your full tank last a little longer.
- Choose the right octane: Using a higher octane gas than the manufacturer recommends offers no benefit, and it costs you at the pump.
- Stay away from gas-saving gadgets: The Environmental Protection Agency has tested more than 100 such devices and has found that very few provided any benefits.
- Stay within the speed limit: Gas mileage decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph.
- Avoid unnecessary idling: It wastes fuel, costs you money, and pollutes the air. Turn off the engine if you anticipate a wait.
- Stop and start gently: You can improve in-town gas mileage by up to five percent by driving gently.
There are five more fuel tips, so just read more.
- Use overdrive and cruise control: They improve fuel economy when you're driving on the highway.
- Inflate your tires: Keeping your tires properly inflated and aligned can increase gas mileage up to three percent.
- Keep your engine tuned: Tuning your engine can increase gas mileage by an average of four percent.
- Change your oil: Motor oil that says "energy conserving" contains friction-reducing additives that can improve fuel economy.
- Replace air filters regularly: Replacing clogged filters can increase gas mileage up to 10 percent.

Some great tips! I'm getting my oil changed tonight so hopefully that will help.
1Thanks for the tips!
2Great tips. I'm getting my oil changed this weekend and I really need to slow down.
3Those are great tips! I guess I really need to get my oil changed...haha. And I didn't know that starting and stopping slower saved gas. I'll have to stop punching it off the line then!
4To help with gas mileage, you might also want to follow your manufacturers suggested time to change your oil, not the 3,000 mile rule. Usually they are actually around 5-10k especially if you have a vw that recommends synthetic.
5I wish it was that easy especially when I drive and SUV in NYC and most of the time i'm stuck in traffic and transporting a little league team all over Brooklyn. I just filled up the car this morning which was at half a tank and the total was $35.60.
6Great tips, these are times I am happy not to have a car.
7RosaDilia: $35.60 for half a tank X( that sucks! This is why I defend people who drive SUVs, you suffer enough!
8great tips- i didn't know that driving above 60 mph affects gas milage...i'll keep that in mind
thanks!
9i have also heard to buy your gas in the morning because it is more condensed, from the cold, you get more bang for you buck also to not use the highest locking mechanism because the faster the gas pumps the more fumes are created and the less gas you get, i don't know if any of it is true but it all makes sense to me with the expanding and creation of fumes
10These tips don't even make that big of an impact! I've tried most of them, and guess what, I still have to fill up my car twice a week. Its depressing and its making me poor. $65 each time I need to fill up!!!
Maybe if they made the prius look nicer I would look into getting one, but that car just looks UGLY.
And my brother has a VW Golf, which has better mileage than my car, but still, he needs to fill that up twice a week as well and that costs $50 each time. I miss the days of filling my tank on $25.
11I read somewhere that you shouldn't keep extra junk in your trunk.
12Ha, Angelica I love it! I notice that keeping it at the speed limit and keeping your tires full of (the proper amount of) air makes a little difference.
13Good tips; however, it is still sad that these won't affect the actual price of gas!
14I sure need these tips.
15Filling up twice a week, cv?? You guys must have a heck of a commute. I live about 15 miles from my work, I drive a VW Beetle and I fill up about every two weeks.
16Thanks for the tips, Savvy! I so need to put air in my tires and get an oil change this weekend. I should def. slow down and stop speeding everywhere, lol. I knew going over 60MPH caused gas to dissapear but at this rate, I need to save all the gas I can get! lol, I just filled up my car this morning with 14 gallons at $3.60 for regular unleaded and it cost me nearly $52
That depressed me this morning. I've been wanting to get a new car but ahhh, the gas prices
are definitely what's scaring me! It's $4 in some areas near where I live for premium! Bleh... I have probably 60+ mile commute every day going to and from work/school. Definitely looking
into getting a hybrid... And CV -- Prius's aren't the only hybrids. There's Honda Civics, Toyota Highlanders, Toyota Camrys, Ford Escapes, Lexus RX300 and so on and so on! So still a lot of
cute hybrids out there to look into =)
17I use fuel saver after i visit this web site..
