Hanging out at the mall is one thing that teens across the country have in common, and the traditional habit has been supported by after-school jobs and parental contributions. The love teens have for shopping is still strong, but lately they've had less cash to burn and have been mixing in trips to thrift stores along with their window-shopping mall excursions.
There aren't as many jobs available for younger workers and parents have less disposable income to give to their kids as spending money. The senior editor of Ellegirl.com, Holly Siegel, explained that teens understand the need to cut back and are all about finding deals. She added, "It's a little tacky in the economic unrest to tote a big logo bag." Do you agree with her?

I totally don't get how this is tacky because of the economy? Maybe we should take the logos off our cars, clothes, etc before we start worrying about the purses people are carrying!
1I don't find it tacky. If I have the disposable income to be able to afford something like that, then it's my business and prerogative.
As someone who can't afford one of those bags, it wouldn't bother me to see that anymore than it bothers me to drive behind a Lexus on the way to work.
2I don't think it's tacky because you could apply that to pretty much anything...
It's tacky to live in a big house, because of the economy
It's tacky to drive a nice car, because of the economy
It's tacky to wear clothes that come from anywhere but goodwill, because of the economy
It's tacky to go to the movies, because of the economy
It's tacky to eat out at a restaurant, because of the economy
etc...
3Who cares. I do not think it's tacky. If someone has money and/or wants to go in debt - it's their choice.
4I agree with the other ladies. If I can afford a LV bag then it's my business and I have every right to carry it. If it bothers you and you get jealous get over it. Obviously the person has self-esteem/envy issues.
5i think logo bags are tacky in general but mostly because they dont seem attractive to me. the logos are too distracting and busy and i dont like the fabrics they usually come in and most of all it seems far too expensive for something in canvas or whatever it is. id rather not have someone else's name all over it basically. id rather just have a nice bag.
6It is always tacky.
7I don't see what the economy has to do with it, but bags and clothes with logo feces everywhere are always tacky.
8I think the only “tacky” thing in a weak economy is spending beyond your means. Don’t go into debt just so you can look like you still have money. Don’t buy the logo bag or the luxury car if you can’t afford it.
But if you can afford it, why is it tacky? The best way to help the economy recover is to make purchases you can afford. It puts money back into the economy and keeps other people employed. Keeping the money hidden away in your bank account so that it doesn’t offend those who are having a rougher time than you doesn’t do anybody any good.
That said, logo bags are always tacky.
9Yeah, I don't see my LV bag as tacky. I work hard and save money to buy nice things every now and then for myself. So, nothing tacky about it!
10I agree it's always tacky, but that is how our society works. I can also say it's tacky for celebrities to fly their stylist across the country on a private jet, while some families are eating beans for dinner. That will never change.
11I think the companies should be paying YOU for advertising space when you carry/wear any logo.
)
12Drea- It most certainly is NOT tacky that you work hard and reward yourself occasionally with nice things. It is the reward you chose that is tacky.
13Big Logo bags are always tacky. I don't want to advertise to people what I own, and they look garish. I'd rather have something nice and plain that doesn't have someone else's name or initials emblazoned all over it. A nice leather bag with no embellishments is better than an overpriced logo bag.
As for the economy, I don't think investing in a house to live in or services can be compared to a piece of fabric hanging from your arm.
14I agree that big logo bags are always tacky. I don't care how the economy is doing.
15Oh, and I don't think that they're tacky because they're advertising a label, I just find them aesthetically displeasing.
16I don't see what the big deal is. Those types of bags aren't my style. But how people spend their money, even when the economy is bad, is up to them and who are we to judge?
17i agree with most - what you spend your money on is your business
18but furthermore, expensive bags needn't have logos...i have a more costly bag than that coach one pictured, and it's all leather, without the logo...i feel like this comment must have been made off the cuff or in jest? it doesn't make much sense
don't worry, Drea, the people who say it's tacky do so because they often cannot afford it themselves
19ooh, snarky.
20The Coach bags that do not have the logo all over them are generally way more expensive (up to 2 times more expensive) than the cheaper logo bags. Keep that in mind before asking someone to just get the non-logo one.
I like some designer bags. Gucci is my favorite. Most people pick at the lower-end Coach all the time though.
Just because some people decided to get a home they can't afford, doesn't mean we can't live our lives like we want(those of us who are doing well).
21I'm not sure anything a teenage girl does can be considered tacky. They are just discovering their personal style. And if they are able to thrive in these times of "economic unrest", good for them.
22LOL! All sizes of logo bags are always tacky, no matter the state of the economy!
Ive always thought so and I always will, and I am so happy to see that the majority thinks so too, (so far).
23I don't care if you're talking about a LV logo or a Guess logo bag. The print is ugly and tacky. I prefer my LV bags w/o the logos.
As for the economy - who cares? A 15 year-old with a Coach logo bag is a bit much but if a parent wants to buy it for them, it's their choice.
24Aw, sweetie, we can afford them, we just honestly and seriously think that they are fugly, repetitive, and played-out
25I think all of this backlash is due to the celebrity hype about designer bags and their mass production of fakes...
I think Chloe bags are disguistingly ugly and they have no logo
26Wow, skigurl them are fightin' words.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I personally don't like logos but I have friends that do and they have a lovely sense of style. However, I don't know how that opinion correlates to my disposable income.
27I think the orignal comment was "It's a little tacky in the economic unrest to tote a big logo bag."
Meaning tacky b/c of the cost of a simply purse. High cost during bad economic time = Tacky
I personally spend more money on my running shoes than pocketbooks and I throw the shoes out after 3 months. I guess my 2 expensive bags get way more mileage.
28I don't see how one relates to the other really. I also am not a fan of logos anyways.
29I don't really see how they relate to each other either. And I really don't think most people would be judgmental or resentful about something like that.
Spend money on what you want to spend money on...it's your business and nobody else's.
30Logo bags and products ARE ALWAYS TACKY.
Does not matter what sort of economic times we are having - brand-wh*ring is TACKY,TACKY,TACKY.
31You know what's tacky (and extremely nauseating)? 12 year olds in Coach sneakers. Give me a break.
32I don't want to be tacky by calling out tackiness in mixed company, but I will just say that I agree with the majority on this one. It has gone the way of Burberry. I had a friend from England that calls it "chav".
Logo'd bags are the easiest and most widely counterfeited, also. I just assume they're all fake unless they're driving a car over $50,000.
As for the luxury-buying in the state of the economy: WHAT state of the economy? I haven't noticed a difference at all, nor know anyone who has. I never think it's tacky to buy what you want to buy unless, say, you are volunteering at a homeless shelter and are wearing a D&G suit.
33I personally thing the bags are always tacky and are just a status symbol. I do think that if you already owned one you shouldn't put it away just because of the economy. If you want to buy another one go ahead, it's your money.
34All logo bags are tacky no matter what is going on with the economy.
35I think bags designed to display a giant logo are pretty fug across the board.
That said, buying one helps the economy, so I think the comment is pretty dumb.
36I don't see why it would be more tacky to carry a logo bag now than before. It's just a purse and we all need to carry one. I happen to think it's better to buy one good quality bag you will use over and over again (logo or not, whatever your preference is) than a bunch of cheap ones that fall apart after a few uses.
37No, it's tacky to spend time judging people.. People need to get a flipping grip. This isn't the great depression, if someone wants to carry a LV bag, so be it. It's their $$ and life.
38it might be a hard time in the economy but that just means the majority are having a bad time. there is still a small percentage other there making extremely good money, so it's appropriate for them. i do not fall in that category but this recession won't stop me from holding an LV bag i bought years ago.
i think we just have to think of LV as how it was intended to be thought of, think of all the old actresses like audrey who carried LV monogram. it's definitely how you carry it.
39I like my logo bags...I worked hard to buy it and I'm gonna use it. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion though.
40i think logos in general are tacky. i am a big fan of designer bags, but i dont like mine to scream "who" they are to the whole world. my marc bags speaks for himself.
but to each their own, rock your bag with pride ladies!
41A senior editor said something this ignorant? So if she see's someone with a logo bag she automatically considers it or them tacky? What a joke! Talk about judging people. You shouldn't judge ANYONE (unless it's a celeb
), did she miss this in kindergarten? How does she know
they didn't get this bag from a thrift store or if it was handed down to them 3 times? This editor needs to go back to the drawing board and stop assuming and judging people based on what
they have and especially not teenagers for goodness sakes!
42Why does it matter? if you're doing very well financially, why should you not spend because the economy sucks??? it's not really your freakin problem!
43I understand the hard times the economy is currently facing, but I can't believe I would have to worry about wearing brand names so as not offend someone. I have cut back alot to make up for the damage done to our current economic system, but I work hard and if I want to give myself a treat then I shouldn't have to worry about who will be angered over my spending MY MONEY how I WANT. Seems like a silly thing to say.
44Since the economy is going poorly, I can't wear my LV bags I got as gifts from my family? That's silly.
Oh and if it makes anyone feel better, my little sister used to work for LV and we got those bags with a CRAZY discount.
45Big logo bags are always tacky, no matter the state of the economy.
46I think this is a bit overboard.
47people who buy designer bags probably can afford it anyway, i don't see why it's tacky
48I think big logo bags a tacky in the first place but I do not see the problem with having one during a bad economy. That is the last thing I would think about when I see one, well maybe now but not before. Normally it was that is so ugly or that is totally fake.
