Yesterday's episode of Oprah featured two wasteful families that the mogul herself challenged to cut out their defining habits in seven days. It sort of reminded me of Honey We're Killing the Kids in the sense that some of their household regularities were so obviously problematic, and the families even admitted this much, yet they never made any changes on their own. Certainly, overcoming these issues is better late than never.

We meet the Dominguez family of five and the mom, Tina, makes four separate meals for the family without saving any leftovers and they often eat fast food. Not only does the mom have a water bottle habit, but she doesn't recycle the empty ones — that's a two-handed environmental slap! Their gas and electric bills are so high from leaving lights and appliances on and cranking up the thermostat that the dad, Joe, says he sometimes has to borrow money from friends or family. Oprah says: No more individually prepared meals, eat leftovers, no more fast food, replace water bottle habit with Brita, limit TV time to one hour per day, ban iPods and video games, computers used for homework only, turn down the thermostat, and shop in your closets instead of the mall. Tina has the hardest time giving up television, the three kids say it was a struggle without their computers. At the end of the challenge week, Tina says, "We never realized how much we wasted. We just spoiled the kids and let them buy what they wanted on the computer with no time limits. We're a changed family."
Do you have any habits that are admittedly wasteful, and would you dare to live without them?

I leave lights on a lot- oops.
1I tend to leave lights on as well because I forget, but lately I've taken note of my bad habit and check that I've turned them off before I leave the house and/or before I leave a room!
2I am guilty of the water bottles. My family doesn't recycle and we should.
and
my Mom is a caterer on the side so when she cooks for just the 4 of us during the week she cooks ALOT and there is always leftovers that we end up throwing away like two days later b/c me and
my bro are sick of eating it.
3I am completely addicted to my laptop, I swear its a sickness. It was broken a few weeks ago, and honestly, it was like a breath of fresh air. Without the temptation to aimlessly surf the internet for hours, I felt like I was actually connect with the REAL world.
4I couldn't live without the internet. I've become so dependent on it that it's sickening.
5Also, I disconnect every electrical appliance that's not in use and make sure all that all curtains are open to let sunlight in and avoid using the lights inside the home. I've also taken recycling very seriously. In my home we recycle bottles, cans, and newspapers.
I always make sure all lights are turned off if no one is in the room, i also don't like watching tv with the lights on so i am usually sitting in the dark watching tv. We do drink bottled water because our tap water is gross but i do recycle the bottles. I have also bought reusable grocery bags so i don't use the plastic ones and when i do get plastic bags i reuse them for the bathroom trash. I have been really good lately about trying not to waste so much.
6I need to be better at recycling. Some months I am good but if I run out of the blue bags, it takes me a min to go back to the store to buy them which then I don't recycle without it.
7I'm good about recycling paper, cans, and bottles. I do have a bad habit of falling asleep with the lights on though, especially after a long work week. At work, people are always leaving the lights and the heat/air on and it bugs me, but I just turn off the lights or the heat when I walk by.
8we recycle- i'm bad about the lights sometimes but we keep our heat at a decent temp and we never crank the air up too much. i always bring leftovers for lunch too
9Hmm, I probably watch too much TV, but I don't just leave it on, I actually sit there in the evening and watch it.
10I don't recycle.
11I don't see how taking away their ipod is saving them money... but hey... whatever. I always recycle my bottles, but I am guilty of buying one a day when I go running. I just like the taste of Aquafina better! Television I could go without, and since I'm mostly on the internet at work all day, I don't feel the need to be on it when I get home.
Eating out, however... Lord, do I need my sushi.
12Giving up my computer, or more accurately the internet, would be the most difficult for me as a lifestyle change.
13That is such a wasteful lifestyle. I'm so glad Oprah intervened!
14For some reason I actually watched that Oprah episode yesterday. And I'll watch the one today because its on "How to get the job you want and deserve".
But yesterday's show on wastefulness got me thinking about what I do that's wasteful. So last night I started turning out lights whenever I left the room (I usually do this but because of memory issues sometimes I forget). I decided that electronics not in use will be unplugged (so bye VCR and DVD players, no power when I'm not using you). Clothe napkins just aren't practical for me because I don't have handy access to a washing machine to launder them regularly. But I decided to leave the lights off in my apartment until its too dark to see. And whenever I'm not directly in front of the TV, it will be off.
Other things like keeping the fridge on low but keeping it packed so it stays colder I already do. I usually only cook enough to have one days leftovers which I eat. I stop with the plastic bottles over 9 months ago and bought a Britta refrigerator dispenser that holds I think a gallon of water in the fridge ready to dispense. No plastic plates or utensils. I try to avoid eating out, unless its a necessity (like I'm starving and about the have a hypoglycemic fit). I don't drive everywhere, I now rarely ride the bus. I walk everywhere that I can within the city of San Francisco. I even lugged 50 pounds of canned goods home on Tuesday from Costco, using a portable, collapsible dollie I bought I while back, then after I took that stuff home, I went back and did the rest of my shopping and lugged another 60+ pounds of groceries home in two reusable Costco shopping bags. My arms nearly fell off but today they're super toned.
So I try to do what I can.
15I love the internet. I really couldn't live without it.
16Something I do that is a result of impatience is keeping my laptop on hibernate instead of just powering off. Sometimes laptops just take too long to load and I am too frustrated to wait. This is especially salient with my laptop at work because it has trouble shutting down automatically so I just give up and put it on stand-by.
17I could easily live without Oprah
18Hahahaha citizenkane.
19Agreed CitizenKane. Agreed!
20i have a horrible water bottle habit but i do throw them in our recycle bin when i'm done. doesn't make it much better but still. and i'm one of those people who always has the tv on for background noise. like now, i'm surfing the net and not even paying attention to the tv but it's on "the girls next door." oops
21I think most people have at least a couple of wasteful habits...I know I'm not perfect in this area, but I'm trying to be better.
I also have a bottled water habit, but I do recycle them. I know we should stop buying bottled water all together and just use the water from our water cooler, but I haven't gotten there yet.
I also shop too much and buy too many things...I need to make a more conscious effort to stop that.
22I burn my trash out back in the burn barrel.
23We need to get better at recycling. In our defense, however, we weren't given any information about it when we moved here 2 years ago, nor did we receive any recycling bins and when I try to get information on obtaining them it's like I have to go through an act of Congress just to get information... it's not handled well at all.
24I'm pretty good about most things. I'm frugal but not in a bad way at least I think. I think I could probably invest in a water filter and a bottle for the gym.
25The most wasteful thing I do is shop online everyday. I am getting packages every day and what happens to all of the packaging? I throw it in the trash. We recycle, but the recycle containers the city gives us aren't big enough for all of our recyclables.
I also have a bottled water habit, but I cut down by buying the big bottles and using glasses and sports containers instead of individual bottles.
No one does everything they could be doing, but if everyone did something it would make a huge impact.
