The new purple (and green) five dollar bill was released into circulation a few weeks ago, and I was finally lucky enough to get one in my hands! I think the front of the bill could use some more purple, but other than that the new bill didn't disappoint my high expectations.

Abe's makeover has made the new five significantly more sassy than the other older, less colorful bills. In the gallery below you can see how the new five compares to several of the existing bills, including the hundred, twenty, ten and the one dollar bill. I've also pointed out some of the differences I can see among the various bills. Have you gotten a hold of a new five yet?
- There's a slight purple hue around Abe's head, and how awesome are the tiny stars?!
- Obviously, the huge purple five is what makes the new bill stand out and actually gives the bill a bit of an edge.
- The five and the twenty are the only two that don't frame the presidents' heads.
- The backs of the bills are distinctly different from one another, with the twenty and ten resembling each other most.

I totally agree! The new five is significantly more sassy than the other older!!!
1I got one of these just the other day and had to look for the paper USA strip in the light because I thought it was fake! Thanks for easing my concience a little for spending it so quickly. I agree that they should have added more purple though, especially on the front. Maybe on Abe's little bowtie?
2How much is this costing the economy to produce?
3I got some the other day when I cashed my check. It seems like pretty soon we are going to have really colorful money like most of Europe.
4I spend money so fast that If I did have one I probably didn't notice.
5I was so mad at myself the other day about not noticing the new $5 bill! I was handing it over to pay for something when I noticed it. It was then too late.
6The ENORMOUS purple five on the back weirds me out.
7I got two crispy ones must've been as soon as they came out, and so wanted to hang onto them, but of course spent them like water.
8I don't use cash, but I went to the bank to get one when they came out. I think they're pretty and they feel weird...like they're fake. More colors!
9I hardly ever carry cash around with me so I don't think I've seen the new $5.
10"how much is this costing the economy" ah. so typical. i guess you all don't approve of the "clown" money up here in Canada?! the bills also have a lot of other things, like those metal-coloured strips. New zealand and singapore (and others, i'm sure) have cool see-through bits that are plastic. so cool.
11I saw one of these yesterday at work. One of my coworkers actually turned to me after the customer handed it to him and asked if it was real. lol!
12it sure looks pretty
13I had one of the new fives.
14Yes, tdamji--I am typical. I would like to know what this is costing the American economy with the decrease value of the United States dollar, unemployment on the high and nothing in sight for people without jobs, the pending recession (whether it is or is not), and the mortgage crisis - excuse me for asking but with the resources that seem to be depleting - I would like to know the strain or if this not a strain, has on the economy.
15The purpose for the big purple five is to help against fake hundred dollar bills. People have been taking 5's and "turning them into hundreds". I work in retail and they sent memo's to all the stores about it. At first I was like, Shouldn't it be common sense that Lincoln's face is on a hundred. But my manager explained to me that they wait until it's really busy so your less likely to pay attention and just quickly mark it with the money pen.
