Big named businesses began declaring bankruptcy in 2008, and we'd be foolishly optimistic to think the buck stopped in the new year. While it may not make sense to pay any attention to predictions, it's always good to stay in tune with what's happening in our economy and the types of companies on this list say a lot about the bigger picture. Using data from sources such as Moody's Investors Service, US News compiled a list of 15 companies it believes will look much different by the end of 2009. Would you be sad to see any of them go?
- Rite Aid
- Claire's Stores
- Chrysler
- Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group
- Realogy Corp.
- Station Casinos
- Loehmann's Capital Corp.
- Sbarro
- Six Flags
- Blockbuster
- Krispy Kreme
- Landry's Restaurants
- Sirius Satellite Radio
- Trump Entertainment Resorts Holdings
- BearingPoint

Erickson Beamon
Blockbuster.
1I'm not gonna lie, I'd be devastated to see Rite Aid go. The preteen in me would miss Claire's Stores and Sbarro.
2Oh my gosh, I hate to say it, but I'd be lost without Rite Aid, Blockbuster, Sirius and Krispy Kreme. Not to mention Six Flags. How can all of my favorites be on this list?
3that's an interesting list. i think that it would definitely change things if those companies went away. i used to work on the media for Six Flags and knew that in '07 they were having it rough, but i guess it's just hard for people to pay as much to go to theme parks when they just don't have that kind of money to spend. it's NOT cheap to go there for a day.
as for loehmans - is that the discount clothing store? i love it there since i'm able to buy designer stuff for less, so i'd be sad if they went under too!
4It is difficult to imagine Rite Aid going under, pharma is more of a necessity, unless they simply execute poorly. I'm surprised Krispy Kreme hasn't gone away yet. Sirius has been trying to hook Dish Network into a buyout offer. I guess the only one I think would impact me would be seeing Sirius go because of their exclusive content.
5Noooooooooo....rite aid can't go....no more chocolate malted crunch ice cream!
6Not Claire's! Where will I get my cheap jewelry then?
7well as a Detroit-er I'll be upset if/when Chrysler goes (although I'm from a GM family.) The only other one that would effect me would be Rite Aid. I haven't shopped at a Claire's in years, and I (again being from Detroit) go to Cedar Point for my roller coaster fix. I've never heard of some of them...what's Loehmans? And Landry's? hmmm....
8Rite Aid
9Six Flags
10I think Krispy Kreme really messed up when they started putting their donuts inside grocery stores...the appeal of it was because there werent many around and it was like a treat to finally drive by one and see the HOT sign on...Just my opinion though!
Aww, I'd be sad to see Claire's go just because of the memories I have in that place. And Six Flags?? I love that place!
11I don't think I would be affected if any or all of these companies went under.
12I read this list so fast, I thought I saw Dollar Store and I got scared.
13Hmmm other than Rite Aid I wouldn't be affected, although by any of these places closing it affects the economy that then affects me soooo...
Save them all!!!
14Mama Sbarro can't go down!
I do agree that Six Flags needs an overhaul ... but I can't imagine it being taken down completely.
15i love claires, i get all my earrings and nail polish there. sadness!!
16Oy, Krispy Kreme. Their HQ is one town over from me. When they went public, it was huge news; everyone was convinced that the stock would soar. Then within months they tanked and I don't think they've ever recovered.
17I wouldn't be surprised to see Cedar Fair buy out Six Flags. I'm not too sure about the specifics, but I know Cedar Fair has been expanding the past few years.
18Wow. I will be really depressed if Six Flags goes under...
19Where will I take my prescription and get my Sour Patch Kids fix at 4 in the morning without Rite Aid?
How I could purchase my Happy Bunny slippers and Grumpy Bear Pillow at the same time if I had no Claire's?
This is horrible!!
20I'd too be very sad if Six Flags were to go out of business
21Krispy Kreme got too big, too fast. Same thing happened to Starbucks. When companies expand like crazy it usually comes back to bite them. I have never been to six flags and don't like roller coasters, so I wouldn't miss them. I do like RIte Aid though.
22Krispy Kreme?
23I used to love going to my local Rite Aid in college to get 99 cent ice cream scoops.
Not Sbarro!!! They have good pizza. I'll have to try some of their other stuff before they go out of business.
Good riddance Blockbuster! Now excuse me while I weep for Loehmann's.
24omg but i luv loehmans! and rite aid! T_T
25The only 2 I'm sad to see might go are Six Flags and Loehmann's... poo.
26Six Flags, Claires and Krispy would make me sad.
27
Krispy Kreme
28NOT LOEHMANN'S! Nooooooooo.
29Rite Aid really? even with the astronomical prices that they upcharge on prescriptions????
I would cry if loehmann's went bankrupt
30Rite Aid has been expanding here in New England lately but they've probably expanded too fast. I do remember eating their ice cream when I was growing up though and I'd miss it.
Blockbuster stores have been closing left and right here too. I will miss their physical stores and I was a Total Access customer for a while, but now I've switched to Netflix.
31well I work part-time at Rite Aid so I'm pretty sure that I would be the most sad about Rite Aid closing.
32Too bad about Rite Aid.
33Hmm, I love the cheap accessories at Claire's, but I'd be willing to pay a little more if it would help keep them in business! And I would be absolutely devastated if SiriusXM went under.
C'mon, they only have $175 million in debt, can't they get a bailout like everyone else
is?
34Blockbuster is almost archaic in this day and age - why spend $5 to rent a movie no matter how long I can keep it, when I can either get it at Redbox for $1/day (as long as we ever keep our redbox movies,) or get it from Netflix and keep it for as long as I want?
I'd be sad to see Six Flags go, but I haven't been in years, so it's not like I'd be terribly surprised to see it happen. I'll just miss knowing that there are people out there making bigger and badder roller coasters all the time.
Not Krispy Kreme!!!!!
35I would be so sad if Krispy Kreme went under...Valancyjane I think we must be near each other because I live one town over from KK headquarters too!
36sarah i agree with you on the whole krispy kreme thing...now that you can get them basically everywhere, they're not a "treat" anymore. but of course i still love them!
37I like Rite Aid way better than other pharmacys (besides Target of course)...and how come Trump can go bankrupt on crap and then make a comeback??!
38Krispy Kreme. They are the only doughnut that I really like.
39Sbarros?! I suppose I'm not surprised there...I've only ever seen it at the mall, but their food is fantastic! And you get so much for what you pay.
Blockbuster's doesn't surprise me at all. Krispy Kreme sort of does.
40I don't even think we have Sbarro's anymore.I would be sad if Blockbuster,Claires, and Krispy Kreme and Rite Aid go under.I haven't been to these places in years but I like them.
41In short? No. Not any of them.
42The land Six Flags is sitting on is probably worth a lot more than the stuff that sits on it, I'd understand if they decided to sell it off.
Kind of a bummer about Rite Aid, but we're being overloaded by CVS stores at the moment. Seriously. I live by 6 of them.
43WHAT?! 6 FLAGS?! nooooo way, not in my lifetime!
44everything else can go, now worries there
didn't sirius file for bankruptcy just this past week? i recall because my boss subscribes to XM radio.
rite aid sells ice cream?
45sorry, but six flags deserves it..they've been ripping us off for decades.
Sbarro
. The few times I go to the mall (I mainly shop online) I always stop at Sbarro for a
meal; my favorite is the zitti with melted cheese and tomoato sauce (with a hint of basil). Yum. I would miss the place.
I would sort of miss Rite-Aid; it is only a minute from my house. Though we have a Walgreens and two CVS stores, so I'm not upset. Still sad to see them go; it represents the times.
46I just re-read the list and noticed Loehmann's. That would be quite a loss. I like their website, they had/have some great deals. I still love my Nicole Miller s/s pink sweater jacket (only $30 was $125.) Same goes for the pieces by Free People.
47Get rid of them! Most of them just sell expensive things that people don't need. Though, my sweetie will be sad to see Sbarro go. Nothing like a really cheap plate of pretty bad spaghetti.
48It would be sad to see any of these places go.... sbarro, claires=childhood memories.. if six flags were to go that would be bad for many cities, including mine. Imagine the amusement park abandoned.. it would turn into a nightmare! Krispy Kreme can't go!! I may not have been there in a looong time, but its a classic!!
you shouldn't say you don't care if any of these places go.. bc once they do they leave behind empty locations that will become rundown and unused... with the economy as it is..
49Not Krispy Kreme
.... Too many memories!
