Thinking Inside a Box: The Ideal Cubicle

It may seem like describing a particular workspace as an "ideal cubicle" is an attempt to be ironic, but the office designers at IDEO who teamed up with Scott Adams (creator of Dilbert) to create this ideal cubicle weren't intending irony in its creation. The design boasts "practical considerations" like "modules for seats, computers, displays, and lights; more whimsical modules provide a hammock, an aquarium, and a hamster wheel." The first cubicle was introduced in 1968 — just 40 years ago workplaces were cube free! I've never had the cubicle experience, but I don't exactly feel left out about it. Have you lived the cube life?

i think that looks a lot better than my space. i'm all about modern/contemporary looking things - so i wish that i could get a space like that. oh well.

I've done it before. Its not that bad.

Its very economical, especially for government buildings.

And its good for team building, because when everyone is shut up in their separate respective offices there's not that much interaction as when you're sitting right on top of each other.

The things I dont miss about cubes tho are that you can hear everything from the people around you, including phone conversations that you really dont want to hear and you can smell what everyone is eating for lunch when they eat at their desks.

And when its things like tuna fish it can get kinda gross Eye-wink

This is cool. I think I'll show it to my boss so they can set up the current workplace like this.

I'd definitely take that one at the top! Lots of room for everything.

I'm not sure how good I think cubes are for team building - a lot of people in my office put up curtains and there's very little interaction between those of us in the cubes most of the time.

I don't mind it most of the time - my coworker and I talk through our cube walls all the time, but it does get annoying sometimes.

    I love my cubie... Smiling

It's not square, it's more of a long rectangle, lol And it's covered with pictures of my boy.

Don't get me wrong... I'd much rather have an office with a window (I'm working on that now, shhhh, lol) but for a cube, I guess I'm good with what I've got.

I probably have that attitude because before this cube, I was stuck in a "pod" with another person right next to me. I'd rather have a little privacy... So I can goof off and read my daily dose of "sugar"!!!!

My cubicle isn't so bad. It sits against the window so at least I have a view of the outside world Smiling I'd rather have an office though for the privacy.

I'm sitting in my cube right now and it's not so bad. It's a pretty decent sized space and I have a nice view. I do wish my cube was tricked out like that one though! I could use a hammock for napping during my lunch break.

I personally hate my gray dismal cubical. It is completely impersonal and my computer screen faces the entrance to my cubicle so people always look at what I am doing. I would feel a bit better about it if it were a different color and had a door. Oh to have a door!

Writing from my cubicle as we speak (lunch break, of course). I've added a little bit of art here and there, but it's still got that same gray feeling that I just can't get rid of. My biggest problem is the lack of natural light. Only the offices and the break room on the opposite side of the building have views to the outside.

I design cubicles for a living. so haha! BTW that can never be legal with the floor like that, and also california laws would never allow that. Sorry!

I always thought it'd be fun to work in a cubicle. I would decorate it and make it cute (if I were allowed, obviously) and I'd have neighbors to talk to all day! But that's coming from someone who hasn't worked in nine years--any job sounds fun and exciting when you don't need to be there and can leave at any time. It's an adventure!

I loved my cubicle. However it should be noted that my work station before the cubicle was a desk in the middle of the sort of break room and I shared a wall with the bathroom. Yeah, it's not fun to come in to work at night and find the stuff under your desk wet and being forced to guess what happened.

I love my cube. Its so much better than working in retail and spending all that time in the stockroom! All I need now is a mini fridge!
