A company where I was previously employed used to have an awards banquet for some of its staff in one department — imagine a kind of Oscars show (minus the glam) where the only awards were for actors in a leading role. The awards were based on success (measured in money), and all-around merit (kind of like a coach's award in high school sports).
I think recognizing employees in this way can be encouraging for some, but for others it could prove to be discouraging especially if there are office politics involved. What do you think about giving out awards in the office?

This reminds me of the quotes from Reese Witherspoon a while back - "Not everybody is a winner."
I think we're too concerned with being politically correct and not offending anybody these days. If a company wants to award one of their top sellers or hardest workers, they should be able to without worrying about hurting the feelings of people who weren't as motivated or dedicated.
What eggshells we walk on these days!
1My work recently started doing something like this, where we nominate people for an award based on their performance. The only problem -- our departments are so divided and small that I have no clue if people are doing well. It doesn't really cheer me up that my desk would be cluttered with the award. When the award means something, then I'll be more excited. Until then, I prefer being rewarded with a decent raise come review time.
2i'd rather be recognized privately, with praise and a raise/bonus/promotion. attending an awards banquet is close to one of the last things i'd want to do.
3My office has done joke awards for everyone at the xmas party some years, where everyone gets a plaque for something.
I think that private recognition on my performance eval and in discussions with my bosses is enough serious recognition for me.

6I dislike the idea of being recognized with Awards. My school has teacher of the year and school professional of the year. It ends up being a popularity contest instead of who is really the best. I was lucky enough to be able to watch a live feed of a major retailer's holiday party/awards time. They had a mix of fun awards (for those that may not get an excellence award) and one serious award (which my sister got! YAY!).
However - I personally don't like public awards ceremonies. I'm one of the few that thinks that people are being facetious when they thank me for a job well done. I prefer performance incentives. That way, I have something to work towards and if I perform well, I'll get it. It's not someone's "feeling" of if I did well or not, just a measurable standard that I reached.
7I only agree with office awards if they are done in the style of Dundies awards from "The Office"
8I think they are kind of silly I would rather get a day off or raise. I do not need extra crap on my desk saying your so good. I know that I do a good job that is why they keep me.
9I think they are a complete waste of time, and i have been given some in the past. I would rather hear praise throughout the year than on one day with some lame certificate or cheap trophy. I only go and poke my head in, if there are refreshments i will clap my hands if not, back to my office!
10ThePit, I totally thought of the Dundies too! LOL.
11There is no office without politics, and it always turns into a situation where lower level workers have to watch their higher ups congratulate themselves, with the arrogant belief they are "inspiring and motivating" their lessers when they're really just engendering hatred.
12$$ bonuses for good performance in your paycheck. No need to degrade people with plaques.
