Have You Committed a Workplace Faux Pas?

A new CareerBuilder survey asked people to fess up about what they call workplace taboos: If they'd ever kissed a co-worker, drank alcoholic beverages on the job, or spread rumors about colleagues. Thirty-five percent of respondents have locked lips with a co-worker, 31 percent have boozed it up at the office, and 19 percent admitted they'd spread rumors about a colleague. I'm not sure about the kissing a co-worker choice as being taboo — after all, we know how common and accepted work relationships are becoming. However, making out at a work function with your office beau or experimenting with all of the men in the office would be a different story!

I work in a hotel so those are common. (side note:the drinking was part of work got to love having to taste everything!)

i dated a co-worker for a spell. it ended but not poorly. it just died. no worries. it didn't make our work environment weird either. i don't consider that a work faux pas. i suppose wildly making out at an office party would be considered a no-no though.

When I first started my job five years ago, I hit it off really well with a co-worker...we didn't end up dating, but we spent A LOT of time together for a couple of months. Nothing major, but people definitely talked.

My workplace regularly holds beer bashes during work hours with the only caveat that you do not get drunk. Therefore, I've committed the drinking on the job faux pas numerous times. Sticking out tongue

I've had those too, verily. We have a whole fridge filled with a wide variety of beer and if you open up one of the cabinets, I'm pretty sure it might look like a bar.

where are you people working where you can drink on the job?

i talked about a co-worker f*cking the boss. he was a city councilman and i was getting all her work to do because she was "busy". they got married and for some reason it was only a talked about for a blip on the media screen. it was a great job until those 2 couldn't keep their pants on.

I "dated" a co-worker for a while. Wasn't bad for the job, per se, but since it later turned out that he had a girlfriend and a new baby at home, it didn't end well for him.

That jerk. Punched him in the stomach and sent him home.

All of the above. The drinking part though was when I worked at a restaurant and we were encouraged to taste new wines.

I'm in the UK right now and it's pretty common to drink beer during work hours, especially when one of our sponsors swings by with a big box full of beer bottles!

I only drink on the job when most of my coworkers are as well, so I don't think it's really a faux pas.

I agree with all these comments about drinking. I picked other b/c I don't think drinking when appropriate is a faux pas. (Obviously if you are doing shots when you come in at nine, a faux pas is indeed evident, but it's not in the context in which we all mention it.) However, we must be the few folks who have drank or who chose other. The comments don't reflect the poll.

Hell I did market research at Universal...and citywalk is right there with it's multitude of bars and a gas station on the way in to the employee parking...we'd all do some predrinking before certain events to loosen up and my boss would be chilling at a bar in city walk, call me during break from one shift (I was a supervisor) and we'd drink up until the night shift...oh and halloween horror nights? Man the boss would give me cash to go on a beer run to the gas station or we'd fill up a coffee thermos with a delightful beverage lol. Man i miss that job! haha, but what can i say...that drinking on the job was completely encouraged, at least between the bosses and supervisors.

The only one I consider a faux pas is spreading rumors about people. That is just immature and stupid.

Nope, none of these. I didn't know I was such a "good girl"... hah! Eye-wink

I work an 8-5 job and it's expressedly forbidden to drink during work hours, even during your lunch break. So I guess it depends on the type of job that you work at.
