Your Two Cents: Do You Give Political Donations?

Politically active celebs like Ben Affleck, Viggo Mortensen and Dave Matthews have been donating left and right (well, mostly left). While their wallets are much heftier than most of ours, I'm wondering if you put any of your check towards the candidate of your choice or if you leave donating to the celebs.

I give to the parties by voting. They do not pay us to vote, so why should I pay them?

Nope sorry. I only donate to REAL causes that need the money.

I never have before...if I had the funds of a celeb, though, I would certainly contribute.

I contribute if I feel strongly for the candidate, because the sad fact about American politics is that having money to spend on a campaign is a HUGE factor in being a legitimate candidate. Ross Perot was a perfect example of someone that wasn't a great leader, but was allowed to run for office (and some people took him seriously) simply because he had the money to fund a huge campaign.

I always think that the most brilliant leader in the world might be in some small town somewhere, not independently wealthy, and might need to financial assistance to get his or her ideas heard.

i vote. i think that should count for something. plus, i'd much rather donate to charity or just give that money to someone needy.

HA; yes I give. I do only contribute if I feel strongly. This year, my Presidential donation went to now non-candidate Christopher Dodd.

But then again, I work in political fundraising, so I understand giving can be so important here.

Yes, there are MAJOR causes out there. But, say your issues is extreme poverty. If you donated to John Edwards instead of to a group fighting poverty, I couldn't ever blame you because he was so focused on that issue, he probably would have used millions or billions to fight poverty. Therefore, in cases like that, I argue that your political donation can do more good than donating directly to a cause.

There should be an option for "If I had enough money to spend on it, yes" because that would be my answer lol

We made that mistake once, with a local politician, who we thought was a friend. We even put one of those signs in our yard. We are not people who advertise our candidate choices & we never donate funds, so this was a big deal for us.

Long story short, this person ended up not being as good a friend or person as we thought they were. In fact, they turned out to be just another typical politician.

So, we went back to showing our support with our votes only. Lesson learned.

To quote my roommate, "They'll get your money after you elect them into office."

I donated $100 to each Hillary and Barack. It's not a lot, but I like to show my support to their campaign.

I give money to mostly qualified women candidates and work exclusively with an organization whose mission is to identify and encourage women to run for office. Women are over 50% of the population but doesn't come near that number in representation in State houses or Congress.

This is actually the first time I've given anything to any political entity: I recently donated to a party. I just get the feeling that we're at a crossroads in many ways, and I'm concerned about the direction the country goes from here.
