Your Two Cents: Do You Take a Lunch Break?

I don't know anybody that takes a conventional lunch break, and I am wondering if they've become a thing of the past. They seem to be resurrected for co-workers birthdays or reserved for workouts, errands, and doctors appointments. Do you think it's wasteful to spend a lunch hour actually eating, or do you step away from your computer for a midday break?

I love my lunch breaks. No way would I go an entire day without eating a real meal around midday--the food keeps my energy up.

We HAVE to take our lunch breaks. The Union and our bosses make us. In my hour I drive home, get my son and take him to Tae Kwon Do, go to Wendy's for a bakes tater and oranges, drive back to work and sit in the car with the radio on and enjoy my lunch and listen to the News. It sounds like I lot of here, there, and everywhere but I'm one of the few in the building who actually gets out of the building for lunch instead of just eating in the break room.

I don't break, but I wish I did. It's definitely a personal goal for the year.

Everyone I know takes a lunch break...when else do you eat? In fact, in CA you are required to take one if you work over 5 hours a day (as well as a 10-15 min break every 5 hours you work, if I remember correctly). If you don't do this, your employer can get in trouble- and you even have to fill out a waiver if you don't take one (ie because you leave early). I doubt most companies do this though, but since I work for an employment law firm they are pretty strict about that!

I generally eat my lunch (brought from home) at my desk, but I don't usually work at the same time. I'll take the 15 minutes to play online and read Sugar. Occasionally I'll actually go outside and run an errand.

I eat my home-made lunch at my desk and then I walk for 30min, if the weather cooperates. If I cannot go for a walk, I read a book (not work related).

MUNI drivers do not get a lunch break-it means you eat when and where you can, if you can. It's been negotiated right out of our contracts somehow. So there's a 20 minute non-paid period on the schedule however you're still driving the bus during that time.

Apparently, since its a transportation job governed under the DOT, they can treat us like airline pilots and long-haul truck drivers - no lunch break, no casual breaks - just as needed personal breaks for the bathroom and a mandatory break at or before the 12th hour of working.

It would have been nice to know before taking the job.

Great question! I think it's a goal of mine as well to take more lunch breaks each week...I usually try to cut out early instead, but it never works out.

Most days I eat at my desk while working. But sometimes I go out to eat & catch up with coworkers. And sometimes I use the hour to run errands (bank, post office, hair cut).

Most of the time, I go home at lunch to eat and let my dogs out. If I can't get away, I run out, grab a sandwich and eat at my desk while working.

Many of my coworkers, on the other hand, order lunch in, eat at their desks and *then* take their hour lunch. That bugs me although I can't put my finger on why.

I am always out running errands so I will grab something and take it back to the office and snack at my desk while working on other projects. I probably go for a full 1 hour lunch one to two times a month.

Back when I was in an office, lunch break was the time for all the co-workers to get together at a canteen down the block and make fun of the boss behind his back.

Except when there was a rush to get stuff done. Then lunch hour got pushed back, but the boss would spring for food - $2 limit each, just enough for toast and coffee, haha.

Damn, drivers don't get lunch breaks? That sounds dangerous.

I usually eat at my desk, but I make it a point to NOT work while I'm eating. About once or twice a week I eat in the cafeteria with my friends, though. But when the weather's nice, I'll go for a walk for lunch.

In a few months, my office is moving to a better location with more restaurants and stores nearby (right now we're in a boring industrial neighborhood of the city) so I'll probably take more lunch breaks then.

I work as an editor, and if the client does not allow an hour long break at least 5 hours after beginning work, they get charged a penalty fee. Sometimes the producer will have lunch catered in, but they still have to give me at least 30 minutes away from the computer or they are penalized!

Often my friends at work & I try to meet up, or I might eat alone & walk a couple blocks away to the library or post office.

At my job we MUST take at least 1h break for lunch (and up to 1h30). Anyway I think I would not be able to work efficiently the whole afternoon without a break ... but i could take less than the required hour.

Everyone at my work gets one hour for lunch Laughing out loud
At my old job, most people worked thru their lunches. I wasn't one of them, no matter how busy I was I always took some time for lunch. One of the many reasons I did not fit in there Smiling

Truth be told, I don't even have time to EAT lunch 4-5 days/week. The only days I really have the time to shove food in my mouth is when I'm in lab on the weekends. I call it the graduate school scientist diet -- the one meal per day plan.
